To date, Smart-ID has been better known as an authentication tool, with which to certify your identity at banks and other e-service systems. However, if the background color of the user’s Smart-ID application is white, this signifies that it can also be used as a qualified electronic signature.
A qualified electronic signature or qualified e-signature is equivalent to a signature signed by hand but in an electronic environment. A qualified electronic signature may only be issued by those service providers, who meet the requirements of the eIDAS Regulation in force in the European Union (EU). This regulation regulates the use of electronic signatures throughout the EU.
Transformation of a Smart-ID Basic account into a Smart-ID qualified account takes place in three steps:
Opening the Smart-ID app, open the menu in the top left-hand corner of the app. At the bottom of the menu press “Update the account” and fulfill the instructions that follow.
Specify “Biometric identification” as the authentication method and once again follow the instructions that follow.
